If you ask anyone what they wish they had more of in their life, the majority of people would probably answer “time.” Time is precious, and making time for Jiu Jitsu can be a challenge in and of itself.

If martial arts is a priority, you probably want to make the most out of your training time. Here are a few ways to maximize your Jiu Jitsu training:

1. Set SMART goals.

One way to maximize your Jiu Jitsu training is to define what you want to accomplish through goal-setting. Rather than trying to tackle “all the things” at the same time, focus on one or two goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based. By setting these goals, you’ll know exactly what you should focus on in every class or training session.

2. Aim for consistency.

It’s hard to improve your skills when you’re not consistent with your practice. But by creating a regular habit, you’ll increase the frequency of your training sessions while continuing to build off of your most recent gains. To create consistency in your training, make sure you’re making time for recovery. Taking time to rest and rebuild your body helps keep you moving forward while avoiding injury or overtraining.

3. Ask questions.

Another way to get more from your training is to ask questions and treat your instructors as a resource. If you’re struggling or stuck on a skill, don’t be afraid to get some help. No one will know that you’re having a hard time unless you say something. Remember that you’re showing up to learn and get better. And getting guidance from an experienced instructor will be worth it.

4. Spar with everyone.

Roll with everyone. Choose partners who are more advanced than you and learn from them. These are the training partners who will push you to get better. Also, spar with students who are less experienced than you. You might teach them something. Plus, when you explain a skill or concept to someone else, it will help you learn it better, as well.
